oh hello mr snail...
...this cracked me up & made me feel utterly connected back again to this whole retrovore ideal i am aiming for. my friend sarah started a garden in her backyard last year & she is still harvesting all sorts of yummy cold weather greens. she shared some with me all wrapped up in a plastic grocery bag, i was digging through the bag looking for the kale & collards to put into my autumn soup (yum, yum, yum) & i pulled out this humongous piece of bok choy with a special little friend still hanging out on it.
i took him up to the loft deck & stuck him close to the window to take a photo & he was a super inquisitive snail -- stretched all out & trying to figure out where he was i think! i took a little video of him to doing his snail dance moves :) i let him loose outside my building in the bushes. i'm sure he'll find something equally yummy to munch on out there.
in other garden news, i went with shash & sarah on a chicken field trip!! check out shashtin's post & see me feeding the girls. it was super informative & helped me think in reality about what it might like to have a small brood of our own in a garden!
i'm still putzing around the sprout studio trying out some new things, working towards some art goals & generally making super slow progress. but that's okay, as i feel it all mixing around in there & it'll come out at some point.
lastly, we are planning a big ole cross country trip surround chuck berry's 'promised land' song for spring break. 04*10*09!!! more on that fest later :)

since i'm a jenifer, albeit a one "n"ed one...
the jen11 show looks great; here's the commentary by the artist who got all those jen's together...it's obviously super interesting to me! :) go check it out!
More than a million of us were dubbed Jennifer within the span of just fifteen years. From a place of relative obscurity, the name grew on a wave of sudden and unprecedented popularity. We’re starting to learn that the effects of this phenomenon were not entirely trivial. Now as an adult, Jennifer has become targeted as the highly sought after demographic of Generation X. In the business press, we are actually known as The Jennifer Demographic or Jen-eration and are told that “focus should be almost entirely onJennifer right now as habits of all other segments pale in comparison to hers.”
Most of us have some desire to feel unique, as though we have some authentic expression that is exclusively our own. So when the culture spins out the next trend based on you and your name, it is difficult to make sense of what is genuine. Maybe one truth that my Jen-eration makes visible is the simple reminder that we act collectively, often without even knowing it. Done with the right spirit, this can sometimes be the only way to act.
The exhibition was born from both a serious curiosity and a simple novelty. Have members of this Jen-eration unknowingly grown into a common artistic sensibility? Have they become creators of culture in their own particular way? The following show can be understood as a unique experiment or as commentary, by Jennifer on Jennifer. sprout studio is FIVE!
sprout studio turns FIVE this month - sweet, ole march - with promises of spring...it's a good month to turn five in :)
i can hardly believe it's been five years already. it's amazing the amount of information i have acquired about running my own business.......the friends i have met - some so dear to me now.....the fits & starts of crazy tax processing.......the heartaches, the achievements, the excitements, the sweet notes from customers, the burnt out dry creative nothingness to the pop of new ideas forming & brewing in my mind........the crazy long chats to business friends about the woes of wholesaling, to the anger of copy catters, to the joy of holding some hard earned dollars at the end of a craft show day.......the frustrations, the tears, the smiles, the hugs from people alllll over this country that i've sold my goods too.......the hot as ass weather i've stood in to pimp my wares & the windy, insane cold that i've bared to hang out & hope for a sale. the thrill of finding sales in my inbox at the end of the day to the long days of no sales were this recession has made us all scared. to the peeps that wish me well, to customers who are now friends, to comments on my blog, to that happy sunshiney compliment about someone being boosted by something that *i've* made....sweet, sweet, and more sweet.
but mostly, i am proud of me. i am proud i've stuck it out this long & i am ferociously in debt to many people...
i owe so much to so many folks that have helped me along the way. first to my number one mister -- i would never, ever, ever be where i am without his constant support. from building me craft show signage (hello sprout cloud), to photographing my goodies exquisitely to bearing long, boring hours of editing, cropping, and uploading my stuff to my web site. the emotional support, the physical support, and the mental cheering are priceless to me. so i thank him from the bottom of my heart, to the top of my heart and everywhere in between. (thanks dear blog readers for letting me do that here!)
& i thank YOU - readers of this little ole blog that is so much more than just sprout studio news. it's my world & you've helped it to grow. thank you so much!

antony & the johnsons
wow. i was pretty enthralled last night at their show. i have more than a huge crush on antony it's more like...i want to go inside & look around & sit in that presence of his for awhile. i was pretty enraptured last night. rare is the musician/singer that evokes instant tears, and he is one. his music & voice are powerful, beautiful, evocative, wondrous & elegant. the show hall was super terrific too (mason center) -- and his band? impeccable. so, so fantastic. if you get the opportunity, go see him - you will not regret it. & if you don't have his music, go get some right now. right. this. instant.

new favorite resin ring/beneath my feet....mini update
this rad ring is from molly proctor on etsy. she's got some good looking resin! this has tiny embedded mushrooms from california in it - and the text? perfect! i love this new ring & knew i had to have it as soon as i saw it.
i had a dream that mushrooms, along with bees (if we can save them from dying off) and apple cider vinegar to heal everything will save us all. isn't that funny?
besides the fact that i think mushrooms are going to save the planet i also have been loving the shitakes i've been getting at the farmers market - yum, yum, yum!! i've been going weekly to the market, most of the time with mati & sometimes with shash - & occasionally one of my sweet neighbor girlies will tag along too. we've been having brunch afterwards & are hoping to do more of this in the plannings of our community garden! (eeek! i'm so excited about this!!) this past saturday my friend sarah & i went dancing first & then to the market. after that, we meandered around the flower/plant garden store. it was a lovely morning!
i've been daydreaming about our europe trip this summer & searching out paris rentals & getting soo soo excited to be over in europe-town again!! i'm ready to get out my books and start scheming a tentative plan. we know london will be on there because we fly in & out of there. venezia for sure to see the biennale, and perhaps slovenia. (then...?? who knows!)
let's see, we've also been rearranging the studio (when are we not?) and will be putting new cabinets that the mister is constructing up in my space to keep some of the overflow tucked behind doors.
we've got some exciting plans tucked up our sleeve regarding our space and art & i'll tell more about that when we can firm up some plans and a schedule.
the rainy day yesterday resulted in a dee-lish slow food day; eggs florentine for brunch, & autumn soup (my papa's recipe adapted for the veggie -- potatoes, carrots, leeks, onions, chopped tomatoes, herbes de provence, bay leaf, splash of olive oil -- top with parmesan cheese......YUM!) & my mama's buttermilk biscuit recipe sub in some whole wheat white flour instead of all white, plus steamed artichokes from the market. our neighbor brought over chocolate zucchini walnut muffins with a hint of chili pepper & some homemade ginger scones. gah! we had a fest of eating to be sure :)
this week promises to be major full as well. we are seeing several shows with the noise pop festival & going to southern exposure for a drawing rally/opening/fund raiser & game night is this weekend too! i'll report back soon on the festivities!
hope all is well with everyone & a special shout out to my best lady j in ole virginia who needs an extra squeeze. i love you girl, hope things are on the upswing & i've been thinking about you.

elizabeth gilbert is my third lady!
elizabeth gilbert, author of "eat, pray, love" gives a great, great, GREAT talk on creativity here --seriously, make a mug of tea and pull up a chair & listen to her speak to you for 20 minutes. some things come along and are reinforced throughout my life and this talk cemented yet again, what i think about being creative beings. my first lady to do this for me was madeleine l'engle, my how i love that woman and miss that she is not on the earth with us anymore. second lady for me, anne lamott. elizabeth gilbert seems to be homing in on a close third.

a whole new flock of good luck birds have landed
...hoping for spring no doubt! loads of new ceramic good luck birds are up on my site. need someone to have a little spot of luck? these guys and gals are pretty perfect for a pick me up. need one for your pocket because luck is a little fleeting right now? or tuck the little ones under your pillow and hold fast all night through some dreaming. i have one on my computer at work, one on my dresser and one or two in my studio hanging out. bringing me luck? surely!

a lesson in blog tinkering

CSPIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act)!!!!
hey everyone, hopefully you've already heard about this crazy not looked at closely enough law and have done something proactive about it. if you are all new to this here is a brief synopsis: government is wanting to pass a law reducing lead in items for kiddos 12 and under (yay!) unfortunately, they have not taken the time or energy to see what this impact means on small businesses --- to the tune of testing for this lead = thousands of dollars to make sure your items do not have lead in them (boooo!) this will put many businesses out of business (boo!!! we already have a sucky economy!) &/or operating illegally (booo - i don't think anyone wants jail over cute handmade blankie biz)

the hols
i just ate 4 homemade cookies given to me by various kidlets from work for christmas. and i just came back from a long walk at heron's head point with the mister and dixie loo. and i slept in till almost 10am this morning after a lovely dinner party last night here in our place.

craftland + a few other reminders...
but first, can i tell you how aggravating it is to write an entire blog post with all sorts of links to have it disappear into never never internets land?! *huge sigh*
okay, here we go again..
so, sprout studio goodies will be at craftland in providence - if you are anywhere near, GO! it will be amazing, those gals are super duper & put on a terrific indie craft shopping experience with loads of awesome goodies!
also, i'll be shipping goods out for the nyc bust craftacular (yay, finally got in this year!) my bff kimmie will be working the booth, so definitely say hi to her!!

i mean really - can you feel the excitement; the inspiration - the amazing moment?! i'm still all weepy this morning...i am so proud of our country and so ready for this. so, SO ready. and now, yes, we have a lot ahead of us, but for realz, do we have a good one in there now or what?! :)

i have been feeling so hopeful lately -- more so than i have in such a long, long time. i almost distrust that little bird fluttering around in there that says, "it's okay, you can feel this feeling again -- it's alright to have this bubble up & want this excitement and feel these small little earthquakes or 'what ifs' and imagining the *good* from change that can come..."
2 weeks feels like a long time now to wait - but i really, really am so thrilled at the possibilities & i really, REALLY don't want to be incredulous and totally bummed out like in 2004. so here's to HOPE, CHANGE, freedom & of course, we gotta throw love in there right? :)

the pumpkin bounty
yay! a wagon full of pumpkins are a happy site...however, earlier in the day, we had a rather baffling scuffle/exchange at a deadbeat corn maze we tried to go to. it involved popping a squat in a field, & fava beans, & then ended with some jocko dude pulling out a knife (i know WTF???!) & the farmer telling us we needed to leave & jocko dude yelling at us and our friends to "take showers you free loaders" ?? i'm still equally baffled and confused at this whole exchange...i think it seriously involved some strange crappy stereotype about vw bus owners; like we are stinky hippies or something?/! mind you, i was quite presentable as you can see in the photos...but obviously not so to this man. it was kinda crazy.
but we prevailed, went to our soothing and favorite farm and picked up some fab pumpkins to erase the insanity of that weird experience :)
hope your weekends were fantastic, and did not involve potential knife fights in a pumpkin patch!!!!

seaside pumpkin farms
my friend sarah & i split a huge stalk of brussels sprouts too and i picked up a bunch of leeks which went into the delish potato leek soup i made yesterday. and since i can't ever leave a recipe alone, i added a sweet potato in there plus a little butter and some celery - it was soooo good & i'm having it for lunch today!

my favorite mister
i like this guy a lot. he's a good one, and a keeper and i'm glad we found each other :)
we are heading down the coast on saturday with a coupla friends to do some pumpkin patch pickin' and have dinner at a tavern in pescadero that's been around since 1892! i love autumn. it's always been my favorite season. on the east coast it's that final relief from those scorchin' summers and out here, i just breathe better. i love cozying up with books and soups and baking & nesting in. it does my heart good. i mean really, how can you beat homemade pumpkin bread with cup of ginger peach tea & a good book?! that's pretty divine.
i hope your weekend is filled with something autumn-ey and that you have a rejuventating time whatever it is you fancy!

the deck above, my studio below...
this is what you see when you walk into my home and stand in the middle of the room...
we have lots of art making stuff, art, stuff and everything in between :)
we have grand plans for shuffling things around up top on the deck though. it's going to be a library shortly; which i'm insanely excited about. all our books (well, not all, we pared down a lot) from virginia that we've storing are finally going to get some light of day and perusal again. yay!! it's been since 2001 since i've seen some of them...they need some hand holding, some page flipping and some time out in the world :)
i'll post photos when we get closer to said grand plans.
